408 Duke Street was the home of Dr. Elisha Cullen Dick, the colonial physician who was by George Washington’s side when he died. Later, from 1900 to 1925, it was the home of Dr. Kate Waller Barrett, one of Alexandria’s most prominent doctors and social workers. She devoted her life to serving women in crises and opened a number of shelters for unwed mothers.
